International Mathematics Day (IDM) is a global celebration. Every 14th March, all countries are invited to participate through activities of both students and the public in schools, museums, libraries and other spaces.
The legendary female Iranian mathematician Mariam Mirzahani passed away in 2017.
In commemoration of Mariam, we proposed to designate a birthday (May 12) to celebrate women in mathematics at the 2018 World Conference for Mathematics at the Iranian Mathematics Association in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The proposal was approved.
Mirzahani, a professor at Stanford University, obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (1999) from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.
She then completed her PhD. He was a leading scholar of complex surface dynamics and geometry from Harvard University. In 2014, she became the first female recipient of the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics.
With recipients of various medals in mathematics, including the Fields Medal, the Clay Research Award, the Blumental Award, the Ruth Little Sutter Mathematics Award, and Mirzahani’s invaluable contribution to the field, her pioneering career has moved forward to bringing many female mathematicians to come.
