Three suspects in the corruption investigation have been notified of charges, including former EU foreign policy chief Mogherini and European Commission official Stefano Sannino. All were released from custody as they are not considered flight risks.
Belgian authorities have released former EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, European Commission official Stefano Sannino and a third suspect from custody after questioning in a corruption investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
Three suspects were detained on Tuesday after the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) launched an investigation into fraud related to the EU-funded academy for training young diplomats, Reuters reported.
Mogherini served as the EU’s top foreign policy official at the Juncker Commission of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for five years from 2014 to 2019, and was appointed president of the European University in 2020. The Bruges-based institution has strong links with EU institutions and serves as a training ground for future EU officials.
