Gaza civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal reported the latest death toll in a statement on Wednesday as Israeli warplanes continue heavy air attacks on central Rafah and northern areas in the besieged southern Palestinian territory, according to Press TV.
“In less than 12 hours, Israeli occupation forces committed a horrific massacre against civilians in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 100 people, including approximately 35 children. The documented crimes add to a continuing record of violations against our people,” the official said.
Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza City, Khan Yunis, and Central Refugee Camp, hitting homes, tents, and hospital courtyards. Medics warned the death toll could rise, with many seriously injured and some trapped under debris. After nearly 12 hours of heavy bombing, Israel claimed it would resume the ceasefire at 10 a.m. local time (8 a.m. GMT).
“These massacres are being carried out before the eyes of mediators and the international community, who remain silent and unable to take serious steps to stop the bloodshed that has been going on for more than two years,” Bassal added.
Israel, which regularly attacks the Gaza Strip in violation of the cease-fire agreement, accused Hamas of violating the agreement, claiming it attacked Israeli troops in Rafah on Tuesday, killing one soldier.
Hamas rejects the charges and accuses Tel Aviv of violating a destabilizing ceasefire.
