More than 100 former members of the European Parliament (MEPS), representing various political factions, have jointly condemned the ongoing hunger of Gaza civilians as a “war crime” and are calling for a complete suspension of EU association agreements with Israel.
The appeal came in an open letter signed by 110 former MEPS on Tuesday, criticising the European Union’s response to the conflict in Gaza, according to Press TV.
“The Israeli regime’s actions against Israel are nothing but war crimes, which violate the fundamental human rights under which all EU association agreements with third countries are based,” the MEP said in the letter.
They said that the EU’s failure to agree to such a proposal would expose their accomplices in Israel’s war crimes in Gaza, underscoring the need for concrete action against the regime, and urge European Commission President Ursula von Leyen to take decisive steps.
Additionally, signatories criticized the Commission’s late decision in late July to propose that Israel be partially suspended access to the EU’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme. They said “too little, too late” in response to the Israeli atrocities in Gaza.
In a post in X, former European Union foreign policy director Josep Borrell announced his support for the suspension of the EU Association agreement with Israel, which controls trade and political ties between the parties.
