TEHRAN – A total of 602 earthquakes were recorded across the country in the month from October 23 to November 21, according to the Seismology Network of the Geophysical Institute of Tehran University.
Statistically, there were 528 earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 3. 65 earthquakes of magnitude 3 to 4 occurred. Nine earthquakes between magnitude 4 and 5 have occurred in Japan, but no earthquakes greater than magnitude 5 have occurred.
Of the total earthquakes, one with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred in Yazd Governorate on November 1.
Among the provinces in the country, Yazd province had the most earthquakes with 63, followed by South Khorasan province with 54 and Fars province with 53.
During the same period, six earthquakes were recorded in Tehran, the largest of which had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale.
According to the Seismology Network of the Geophysical Institute of Tehran University, a total of 6,272 earthquakes were recorded across the country in the past calendar year (March 2024-March 2025).
Of the registered earthquakes, 150 were of Richter scale 4 or higher. The country experiences at least five earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher each month.
The Iranian Plateau is located in a highly seismically active region of the world and is known not only for large and devastating earthquakes, but also for natural disasters, especially earthquake-related disasters.
Approximately 2 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur in Iran, but over 6 percent of the world’s earthquake casualties in the 20th century were reported to be due to Iranian earthquakes.
