TEHRAN – Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh met his Russian counterpart Andrei Belusov in Moscow on Monday for discussions centered on strengthening bilateral military and defense cooperation.
The conference marks further deepening of strategic ties between the two countries.
Iran’s Russian ambassador, Kazem Jalali, announced the meeting, saying the talks focused on “strengthening bilateral cooperation in the defense and military fields.”
This high level of military involvement highlights the accelerated integrity between Tehran and Moscow. Both are subject to widespread Western sanctions across critical security sectors.
The Defense Ministers’ meeting continued closely shortly after important diplomatic talks at the Kremlin.
On Sunday, Iran’s leader of Islamic Revolution, Ali Larijani consulted Ali Khamenei, who had strove Ali Khamenei with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported that Larijani had presented Tehran’s assessment of the “escalating situation” in West Asia and developments on Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Peskov, Putin reiterated Russia’s “famous position on how to stabilize the situation in the region, and political reconciliation of Iran’s nuclear program.”
These talks came amidst the backdrop of increasing regional instability following a 12-day US-backed Israeli attack on Iran, resulting in the martialism of more than 1,062 Iranians, including civilians, nuclear scientists and military commanders.
Putin has accused aggression of “decisively unacceptable” and as a violation of the UN Charter.
Russia, a key signatories of the 2015 Nuclear Trade (JCPOA), has also expressed its willingness to mediate between Tehran and Washington.
The Tehran-Moscow partnership is formally fixed by the Landmark Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, signed by Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian and Putin on January 17th.
The treaty came into effect after official ratification by President Putin in April and approval by the Iranian parliament (Majlis) in May.
