The driver was taken into custody, Vancouver police said in a post on social media platform X.
The incident unfolded in the western city of Vancouver on Saturday night as crowds gathered at the Philippine cultural event Lapu Lapu Day Block Party.
Just after 8pm, E. Many people were killed and several others were injured after drivers ran into the crowd at the 41st Avenue and Fraser Street Festival
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrifying incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim.
British Columbia Premier David Ebby said he was “shocked and heartbroken” to hear about the lives lost and the injuries he was injured.
“The police are investigating it and the suspect is in custody,” he said in a social media post.
“We are in touch with the city of Vancouver and provide the necessary assistance. My thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones.”
A video posted on social media shows that victims and wreckage scattered over the long road are not immobile on the ground.
In still photos of the scene, a black SUV is seen with a crumpled front section.
The incident came ahead of parliamentary elections in Canada on Monday.
