Tehran – The Ministry of the Environment (DOE) observes National Clean Earth Day under the theme of “Clean Energy, Clean Earth” and highlights the important role of renewable energy in saving the planet.
The UN General Assembly declared April 22 as International Mother Earth Day on April 22, 2009. The day recognizes the planet and its ecosystems as a common home for humanity, recognizing the need to strengthen people’s livelihoods, counter climate change, and protect them to stop the collapse of biodiversity.
The DOE plans to mark the day by holding educational programs to raise public awareness and promoting public participation in addressing environmental issues, Mehr’s news agency reported.
When provided by the sun, wind, water, waste and heat from the earth, renewable energy sources are abundant and do not release greenhouse gases or pollutants into the air.
It also benefits communities that don’t have access to reliable power sources. For a population without clean energy access, a lack of reliable power hampers education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
Many developing regions still rely heavily on polluting fossil fuels for daily life. If the current trend continues, by 2030, around 1.8 billion people will still use unsafe, unhealthy, inefficient cooking systems.
Sadly, planetary destruction is already accelerating due to climate change, anthropogenic changes to nature. and crimes that destroy biodiversity, such as deforestation, land use changes, intensifying agriculture, livestock production, or increased illegal wildlife trade.
Mother Earth clearly urges us to take action. This is the need to move towards a more sustainable economy that serves both people and the planet. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect the planet.
Earth Day has guided the world to educate and mobilize its citizens to take action to address major environmental issues. We are global advocates for the health of our planet and seek to protect our air, oceans, soils, ecosystems, wildlife and human health.
April 22, 2025, we will commemorate the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. It is expected that more than 1 billion people from 192 countries and around the world will participate, demonstrating the long-standing convening power of Earth Day, and bringing people of all life walks for a better future.
This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” and we are asking everyone to support three times more renewable energy by 2030.
Iran’s renewable energy capacity
On April 17, Iran’s Ministry of Energy announced that 15 newly constructed solar power plants with a total capacity of 100 megawatts will be operational nationwide. The 15 completed solar units are located in several states, including Naein, Kuhpayeh, Yazd (Khezrabad, Abarkouh), Razavi Khorasan (Chenaran 2 and 3, Kashmar, Bahariyheh), South Khorasan (Khusf), Khiran (Jiran), Shiran (Jiras, Shirasan). (Mahallat), and Alborz (Hashtgerd, Eshtehard).
According to the ministry, during the first seven months of President Masudo Pezeschkian’s administration, it was added to the grid nationwide, representing a third of all capacity, equivalent to a third of the new renewable energy capacity of 400 megawatts. With the launch of these new units, Iran’s total renewable energy capacity will rise to 500 megawatts.
