Tehran – A national campaign was launched on June 27th, the beginning of Muharam month, with 17,000 prisoners aiming to release intentional crimes.
A total of 187 prisoners (11 women and 176 men) were released until June 30th. The campaign is intended to assist people who have been imprisoned for their inability to pay financial obligations or dues due to accidents or other unintended lawsuits.
Last year, during Muharram and Safah during the first two months, the benefactor helped to free 96 women and 1,643 male prisoners. The released prisoners’ total debt amounted to 40 trillion rials (approximately $45 million).
Also, during the Holy Month of Ramadan (March 2-30), the benefactor helped release a total of 2,500 prisoners for unintended crimes. The released prisoners’ total debt was 40 trillion rials (approximately $45 million), Isna reported.
Every month in Ramadan, officials and benefactors organize gatherings and campaigns to raise money to free prisoners of unwilling crimes. Since 1990, benefactors have contributed to the release of more than 180,000 involuntary crime prisoners during Ramadan.
Over past Iranian calendar years (March 2024 to March 2025), benefactors have contributed to 11,380 prisoners exempting unintended crimes within the country. Also, 2,441 prisoners were pardoned over the same period, Isna reported.
The number of prisoners released has increased by 22% compared to 1402 (March 2023 – March 2024). Of the prisoners released, 682 were women and 10,698 were men and were imprisoned for failing to pay their financial obligations. The released prisoners’ total debt was 270 trillion rial (approximately $270 million).
Tehran, Fars and Khorasan Razavi Provinces ranked first to third in the releases of 1,088, 878 and 829 involuntary crime prisoners, respectively. Currently, there are 14,591 prisoners across the country who have unintended crimes. The states of Tehran (2,536), Fars (1,331), and Isfahan (1,183) have the highest number of involuntary crime prisoners.
The unwilling crime of free prisoners is carried out in three ways. The first method is to allow the prisoner to leave, and the second method is to provide many loans to be paid within the prison. The third way of aid is the release of an unintended prisoner by paying the debt.
