Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Envoy Tom Barrack that he had cited two Israeli officials as saying that he was interested in negotiating with the new Syrian government, where the US works as a mediator.
According to senior Israeli officials, Netanyahu is interested in negotiating an updated security transaction and working towards a full peace deal. These were the first such consultations between Israel and Syria since 2011, and would be particularly noteworthy given recent history.
When former extremist Ahmad al-Sharaa took the Assad regime from power, Israel responded with a wave of air strikes that systematically destroyed what was left of the Syrian air force, navy, air defense and missile systems.
Israel also ruled the buffer zone between the states and occupied territories within Syria.
The Netanyahu government is extremely concerned about the Syrian government supported by the new turkey and has moved to cautiously engage with the Trump administration.
The Israelis were shocked when Trump met Alshara in Saudi Arabia last month and announced the lifting of all US sanctions imposed on Syria.
