The high-level week of the UN General Assembly’s 80th Anniversary Session begins on Tuesday in New York with around 150 national secretaries and foreign ministers taking part.
Within a week, international leaders are set to discuss important global challenges, including peace integration, sustainable development, human rights protection, gender equality, artificial intelligence management, the struggle against infectious diseases and mental disorders, and the impacts of climate change.
The event is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, with its central theme being “for more than 80 years for peace, development and human rights.”
According to Tass, representatives of 193 UN member states, observers of the Vatican and Palestinian states, and the European Union will be involved in future debates.
Speeches are given by heads of state, governments and international delegations. High-level sessions with hundreds of bilateral meetings and themed events at assembly bystanders will be held from September 23rd to 29th and are scheduled for Sunday.
First day of discussion
The general discussion will be held in a speech given by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Chairman of Analena Belbok in the 80th Session.
Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva will be the first of the world leaders to take away the floor, a homage to long-standing tradition. It goes back to the fact that in 1947, Oswald Alanja, the then-Brazil Foreign Minister, representing this Latin American nation.
Approximately 30 speakers will speak on the first day of discussion, including leaders from Argentina, Vietnam, Iran, Jordan, Qatar, Poland, Serbia, Turkey and other countries. On the second day, there will be around 40 speakers, including presidents of France, Ukraine, Finland and Slovakia.
