“The Brazilian government announces today, January 17, 2025, that Nigeria will formally join the group as a partner country,” Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Brazil says the BRICS and Nigeria have common interests, as the group is keen to strengthen cooperation between countries of the Global South and calls for reform of international institutions.
Brazil took over the BRICS chairmanship from Russia on January 1st. At the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia in October, it was decided to create a category of BRICS partner countries. The first partner countries were Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Indonesia was also initially named as a BRICS partner, but on January 6, Brazil announced it had granted the Asian nation full member status.
The BRICS group of emerging economies entered 2024 with the official addition of five developing countries.
