According to Yonhap News, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), North Korea launched several ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan.
This missile launch was the first since South Korean President Lee Jae-myung took office in early June.
JCS announced that it detected a launch from Jeonghwa, located in North Hwanghae Province in southern North Korea.
In a statement, JCS said, “Our military is strengthening surveillance in preparation for (possible) additional launches, and maintaining a robust readiness posture while sharing relevant information with the United States and Japan.”
The launch will take place ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which South Korea will host from October 31 to November 1. US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in South Korea several days before the event.
