North Korean leader Kim Jong urged North Korea to remove the request. North Korea reportedly abandons its nuclear weapons as a prerequisite for resuming long-term diplomacy, the Associated Press reported.
Speaking to the country’s Congress on Sunday, Kim stressed that he would not resume dialogue with rival South Korea, a key US ally that supports Kim’s previous summit during his first term as president of the US president, according to a speech released by the national media on Monday.
Kim halted virtually all cooperation with the South after the collapse of his second summit with Trump in 2019 over disagreements over US-led sanctions on the North. Trump is scheduled to visit South Korea next month to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, and, as he did at his third meeting in 2019, urged him to meet Kim at the nuclear border, ultimately failing to save nuclear diplomacy.
