In a statement late on Tuesday night, Oman announced that it had implemented “recent discussions and contacts” and “related authorities” with the United States in Ansala-controlled Yemen.
“Efforts have led to a ceasefire agreement between the two,” Al Jazeera reported.
“We will not in the future target others, including American ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Straits, ensuring freedom of navigation and smooth flow of international commercial transport,” the statement said.
Yemen’s Ansalala (Housis) has not confirmed an agreement yet.
Trump says Yemen’s bombing will cease
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the Ansalala forces “don’t want to fight” his administration and would halt attacks on the Red Sea transport lanes.
“Houthis announced they didn’t want to fight any more,” Trump told White House reporters along with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“They just don’t want to fight, and we respect that. We will stop the bombing, and they surrender, but more importantly, we will receive their words. They say they won’t blow the ships off anymore,” he said.
“We just learned that, so I think it’s very, very positive. …I’m going to accept their words and we’re going to stop the bombing of booties that will be effective soon,” he said.
Trump also said he will make a big announcement before traveling to the Middle East on Thursday or Friday.
“It will be one of the most important announcements that have been made over the years on a particular subject, a very important subject,” he said at the White House. He did not elaborate.
Trump is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates starting May 13th.
