The exhibition, Picasso in Tehran, features 66 works from Tmoca’s respected collection, offering a comprehensive view of Picasso’s artistic evolution.
Among these, the highlight is the inclusion of 26 aqua tint prints from the famous “Latouromachia” (The Art of Bull Fight) series, which has never been exhibited in Iran before. Created in 1957, this unusual portfolio highlights Picasso’s deep involvement in Spanish cultural traditions and mastery of prints.
During the ceremony, Nadere Rezai highlighted the transformative role of the museum, saying, “The museum is no longer merely a repository for artwork. It serves as a centre for innovative storytelling, creativity and arts studies.
She further emphasized Picasso’s global influence, saying, “Artists like Picasso revolutionized the world of art with their unique style, shaping the art movements age-long. Iranian contemporary art also retains important cultural and artistic values.
Iran’s Spanish ambassador, Antonio Sanchez Bendito Gaspar, also recognized Picasso’s unparalleled artistic heritage and addressed the audience. “Born in Malaga, Picasso continues to be one of the greatest artistic geniuses of the 20th century. His works have evolved continuously over 70 years and were pioneering in cubism, collage and decorative art. He was always ahead of his time.”
The ambassador also reflected Picasso’s powerful political expression, particularly through his masterpiece, Guernica. “This iconic painting dramatically depicts the horrors of war, providing a universal message of peace and coexistence. Picasso’s artistic concerns were deeply rooted in the quest for new ways of expression.”
Expressing his gratitude to Iranian cultural authorities, Gaspar added: “We are honored to witness this exhibition not only as an ambassador to Spain, but also as someone born in Picasso’s hometown. We hope that this event will promote future cultural cooperation between Iran and Spain.”
The “Picasso’s Tehran” exhibition offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to explore the breadth of Picasso’s genius. The showcase is expected to attract international attention and contribute to a wider exchange between Iran and the global art community.
