The improvement in relations between Russia and the US will take time, as the inertia of unprecedented degradation in relations that took place under President Joe Biden is still very high, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Tas.
He commented on the calculations of TASS. According to this, for the first time in modern Russian history, more than six months will move from the inauguration of the new US president to the top of the US and Russian leaders.
Peskov pointed to an “unprecedented deterioration” of relations between Moscow and Washington under Biden.
“Of course, this process has inertia. It takes time to implement an attempt to place bilateral relations on a regular track,” he said.
According to TASS calculations, six months and 16 days have passed since the new US president took office, but even so, there have been no personal meetings between him and the Russian leader.
Before this, the longest wait was also a meeting between Putin and Trump. This was the first term of the American leadership. It took five months and 18 days then. In other years, waiting times for the Russian US Summit averaged one to five months.
After his election, current US President Donald Trump expressed his intention to improve relations with Russia. The new American leaders have called the prospects for a meeting with Vladimir Putin important, as the Kremlin emphasized, but the summit is the result of many bilateral work and will not precede it. Despite this, our leaders have been in constant contact and have had six phone conversations since the beginning of the year.
