The 28-year-old, who gained fame for his videos covering the war, was shot dead by members of an “armed militia” while covering clashes in the city’s Sabra district, Palestinian sources told Al Jazeera Arabic.
Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency reviewed footage released by reporters and activists showing his body, wearing a “journalistic” bulletproof vest, being placed in what appears to be the back of a truck. He had been missing since Sunday morning.
Palestinian sources said there were clashes between Hamas security forces and Domsh clan fighters in Sabra on Sunday, but local authorities have not confirmed this.
A senior Gaza Interior Ministry official told Al Jazeera Arabic that the clashes in Gaza City involved “armed militias affiliated with the (Israeli) occupation.”
The official said security forces had surrounded the militia, adding that “militia members” killed a refugee returning to Gaza City from southern Gaza.
Despite the recent ceasefire, local authorities have repeatedly warned that the security situation in Gaza remains difficult.
