TEHRAN – Consider how over the past 50 years Western leaders, especially in Europe, have repeatedly chanted “democracy” and “no violence.”
For example, when a major drug trafficker in the Middle East is arrested by a country’s police and judicial authorities and sentenced to death, European and American media immediately launch a press attack on the country, denouncing the execution as medieval.
But over the past month or so, President Trump has transformed what was once the “law of the jungle” into a kind of “piracy law” at sea. Trump’s forces are executing several people almost daily in the Caribbean without trial or proof of guilt, effectively turning what were once “summary executions on the spot” into “executions at sea.”
How can an organization like Amnesty International continue to have the courage to preach humanity and human rights in the Middle East when President Trump is violating the law so often and with the tacit approval of European governments?
He and his ally Prime Minister Netanyahu, who massacred more than 20,000 children in Gaza, shamelessly award each other the Nobel Peace Prize. When we hear the infamous slogan of executioners such as Hitler and Genghis Khan, “Peace through strength,” we become more and more convinced that in real life we are living in a chapter of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
