Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke at the UPMC Memorial after gunmen fired fire inside the hospital on Sunday.
The incident began around 10:35am at the UPMC Memorial in York County. Six people were attacked and injured in the shooting, including three medical staff and three police officers, according to state officials.
West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was shot dead at the scene.
The archer has been identified as the Diogenes Archangel Ortiz. He is said to have entered the hospital with a handgun and a zip tie. Archangel Ortiz is said to have headed straight to the ICU. There, authorities said they had detained several members of the UPMC staff hostages.
At one point, he reportedly zipped the hands of UPMC staffers together and grabbed them at the muzzle in the hospital corridor. That’s when the officers opened the fire and killed him, they said.
Governor Shapiro and state Attorney General Dave Sunday have asserted that there can be “unquestionable” that officers have been justified in using deadly force.
The remaining victims are reportedly in stable condition.
“Our West York Borough family is suffering from painful losses today in response to today’s tragic call for mutual aid in UPMC’s West Manchester Township.
West York Borough police officer Andrew Duarte was reportedly killed at the scene of an aggressive shooting.
“We ask that the community gather together in solidarity, respect and prayer as the broken hearts grieve at this point. We are pleased to see the support and respect at 1381 West Poplar Street, West York, Pennsylvania. We welcome the laying of flowers at the show,” the officer wrote. On facebook.
The borough did not have any further comments from respecting the families involved.
Wellspun York Hospital received five individuals from the UPMC shooting today. The hospital provided FOX43 with the following statement:
“Immediately after 11:00am, the clinical team at Wellspanyoke Hospital was informed of the status of an active shooter who was injured in a nearby hospital. At about 12:00pm, the first patient was treated at the hospital. “We arrived from this incident. The emergency department team is assessing five individuals for treatment and cannot share details about a particular patient due to HIPAA privacy restrictions.”
Hospital officials confirmed that the Associated Press was not injured, and that the gunman was dead, but the extent of the other injuries was unknown.
