They attacked the Southern Command area and attacked suspected drug-trafficking vessels on both sides of South America, The Hill reported.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, carrying more than 4,000 sailors and dozens of tactical aircraft, entered SOUTHCOM’s waters after being directed by the Department of Defense (DOD) to leave the Mediterranean Sea in late October to help dismantle transnational criminal organizations and curb drug smuggling, authorities said.
“The increased presence of U.S. forces in the USSOUTHCOM AOR will strengthen the United States’ ability to detect, monitor, and disrupt illegal actors and activities that undermine the security and prosperity of the U.S. homeland and the security of the Western Hemisphere,” Pentagon Chief Press Secretary Sean Parnell said in a statement Tuesday.
“These units will strengthen and augment existing capabilities to disrupt drug trafficking and undermine and dismantle transnational criminal organizations,” Parnell added.
