TEHRAN – Iranian President Masudo Pezeshkian welcomes the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement and calls it an important step towards regional stability.
In a call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Sunday, Pezeshkian congratulated the two countries on reaching an agreement and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to promoting peace and cooperation in the Caucasus.
During their discussion, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and exchanged opinions on recent developments, particularly on draft peace treaties agreed by Armenia and Azerbaijan. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran consistently supports peaceful coexistence between its neighbouring countries, while maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Iranian president also highlighted the strengthened relations between Tehran and Yerevan, and the need for both governments to accelerate the implementation of bilateral agreements across various sectors.
Prime Minister Pashinyan explained to Pezeshkian about the negotiation process that led to a peace deal. He expressed his appreciation for Iran’s role in promoting the transaction and reiterated Armenia’s commitment to continuing diplomatic efforts to ensure its full implementation. He also emphasized that Yerevan was committed to strengthening regional cooperation and establishing the treaty in the near future.
Pasishnyan further thanked Pezeshkian for his efforts to strengthen Armenia-Iran relations and emphasized his country’s determination to implement an agreement reached between the two countries.
Armenia and Azerbaijan on Thursday agreed to texts on a peace agreement to end a nearly 40-year conflict between the South Caucasian countries, and Yerevan agreed to abandon the claims to Karabakh.
Karabakh was the focus of two devastating wars between the two countries. One in the 1990s and the other in 2020 in another country. The region has always been recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, but Baku regenerated it completely after a rapid 24-hour military operation.
In response to development, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described the agreement as a “necessary and important step” to achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
