TEHRAN – President Masuud Pezeshkian traveled to Bandar Abbas on Sunday to visit Shahid Rajae port, where a massive explosion caused great damage and death on Saturday.
He visited the hospital and met individuals who were injured during the incident.
The President attended an extraordinary meeting of the state’s Crisis Management Headquarters, held in front of the Minister and associated officials, in order to facilitate handling of the situation, compensate for damages and restore normal conditions to Shahid Rajaee Port.
There are also Home Minister Escandar Momeni, Transport and Urban Development Farzane Sadegu, and Pirhosine Coryband, director of the Red Crescent Society.
The explosion occurred around 12:30pm local time, with at least 28 deaths and 800 injured, according to the state’s Office of Justice.
The strategically important port is approximately 15 km southwest of Bandar Abbas Port on the north shore of the Strait of Hormuz.
The exact cause of the explosion is not yet known. However, government spokeswoman Fateme Mohajelani said several containers that were stored in the port and containing chemicals probably exploded.
Government spokesman Fateme Mohajelani declared a national day of mourning on Monday.

Additionally, spokesman for the Republic of Azerbaijan, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parira, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Japanese Ambassador Tamaki Tukada, Kurdistan President Netilvan Barzani, Crown Prince Sheikh Saba Al Khalid, Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashit Meredou, Kazakh President Kasim Jomat Tokayev, Stephen Dujarik, and the UN Secretary-General, and Islamic World League have sent messages of sympathy and sadness.
