Former EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has been detained during a police raid as part of a fraud investigation, Belgian media reported.
Mogherini was among three suspects questioned on Tuesday morning after Belgian authorities raided the offices of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European University in the city of Bruges, and a series of private homes.
Her name was revealed by the newspapers Récord and Le Soir, citing sources.
The second person detained is Stefano Sannino, a former EEAS director-general and current director-general of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf (DG MENA), Le Soir reported.
The third person is reportedly a manager at European University.
Mr. Mogherini served as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, heading the EEAS, the EU’s foreign affairs arm, from 2014 to 2019. Since September 2020, she has been the Rector of the University of Europe, a prestigious university funded by the EU.
