“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Portugal will recognize the Palestine province. An official declaration of approval will be made on Sunday, September 21,” he said a move will come ahead of a high-level meeting in New York.
Lisbon flagged its intentions in July, citing “a highly worrying evolution of conflict,” the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, and Israel’s repeated threats to Palestinian territory.
Other Western countries, including Belgium, France and the UK, are expected to formally recognize Palestine during Parliament.
French President Emmanuel Macron said in July that Britain would act if Israel fails to meet the conditions aimed at improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, but France would do so.
Priority said the country is “cooperating to end the humanitarian catastrophe in the Middle East,” adding that it “has nothing to do with US President Donald Trump’s visit to the nation.”
The UN gathering will focus on the advancement of two state solutions to the long-term Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
UN agents recently concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The death toll went over 65,000 there. Approximately one-quarter of the UN member states already recognize Palestine, and in 2024 Ireland, Spain and Norway officially recognized it.
