Lebanon’s Joseph Orn has denounced “attempts to drug Lebanon into a cycle of violence” after at least two civilians were killed in southern Lebanon’s airstrikes for blatant violations of a ceasefire agreement with the Arab state.
In a statement released on Saturday, Aoun asked the Army to launch an investigation, saying that they would “take necessary measures to maintain the safety of citizens.”
“What happened in the South today and what has been going on since February 18th represents a blow to the Lebanese rescue project that the Lebanese agreed unanimously,” he said.
Aoun also called on all relevant forces in southern Lebanon, particularly the oversight committee formed following the ceasefire agreement, to seriously follow up on the deployment of the Lebanese Army to prevent negative impacts and avoid violations and confusion that could put the country at risk.
Civil defense in southern Lebanon has announced that two people have been killed and 10 others have been injured in Israeli airstrikes in the town of Turin.
Previously, Israeli forces have struck a position belonging to the Hezbollah Resistance movement in southern Lebanon following a rocket fire heading from Lebanon’s territory to the north of the occupied territory.
The Israeli Army also said the air force had intercepted three rockets fired from Lebanon towards a town north of the Galilee region.
Israeli public broadcaster Kan TV News claimed that the troops intercepted two more rockets before they crossed into the air over the occupying territories.
Israeli military minister Israel Katz warned that the army would fight back after a rocket fire from Lebanon to the north of the occupied Israeli territory.
“We cannot allow fires from Lebanon in the Galilee community,” Katz said. “The Lebanese government is in charge of attacks from its territory. I have ordered the troops to respond accordingly.”
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s UN peacekeeping forces said it was “wary of possible escalations of violence” following the rocket fire.
“A further escalation of this instability could have serious consequences for the region,” he said.
“We urge all parties to avoid risking the progress made, especially when civilian lives and the vulnerable stability observed in recent months are at stake.”
