Nicolas Maduro of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace: “We call on the United States and President Trump to abandon the CIA coup policy. Venezuela wants peace and sovereignty, not imperial aggression.”
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil: “These operations seek to legitimize regime change operations with the ultimate goal of seizing Venezuela’s oil resources.”
Colombian President Gustavo Petro distanced his country from Colombia’s recent moves, warning that the CIA’s activities in Venezuela could “cause instability” and undermine Colombia’s ongoing peace efforts. Speaking in Putumayo, President Petro stressed that Bogotá would not participate in “foreign interference” in the affairs of neighboring countries and reaffirmed Colombia’s commitment to regional stability and sovereignty.
Analysts say the directive could further isolate the United States in Latin America, where countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Colombia have prioritized diplomacy over intervention. The revelations also evoke memories of past CIA-backed coups in Chile, Guatemala, and elsewhere in the region.
