TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araguchi says the path to diplomacy to revive the US’s genuine intentions and adopting a realistic attitude is warned that the continued threat and sanctions will only deepen distrust.
In a call Friday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Aragucci said he criticised the US’s inconsistent actions and questioned his commitment to meaningful negotiations. He emphasized that a move forward indirect nuclear talks requires “serious will and realism” from the US.
Top diplomats have reaffirmed Iran’s position as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and while Tehran continues to fulfill its obligations, he has advocated peaceful nuclear rights, including enrichment of uranium.
“To arrive at a fair, balanced and lasting agreement, all parties must avoid demands that contradict the NPT,” Araghchi emphasized.
He also pointed to a US past violation of the 2015 nuclear deal (commonly known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Trust can only be restructured if Washington removes sanctions and provides reliable assurances to enable Iran to enjoy the economic benefits of new or alternative agreements.
“Contradictory statements and continued threats from US authorities continue to erode confidence in their willingness to pursue diplomacy,” he said.
Araguc has also highlighted ongoing consultations with Germany, France and the UK over the past year, reiterating Iran’s preparation for continuing dialogue, urging the European trio to adopt a constructive approach to resolve the conflict.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Guterres welcomed Iran’s diplomatic involvement and emphasized the need to continue negotiations until concrete results are achieved. He also praised the “innovative” handling of developments related to indirect Iran-US negotiations.
