TEHRAN – Russian President Vladimir Putin ratified the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Iran and Russia on Monday, completing the legislative process for the Moscow agreement.
The treaty, which raised bilateral relations to strategic partnerships, was previously approved by both chambers of the Russian Federation Parliament, the state consul on April 7th and the federal council on April 15th.
Currently featured in Russia’s official legal information portal, the document establishes a long-term framework for cooperation through defense, terrorism, energy, finance, transportation, agriculture, culture, science and technology.
It was first signed on January 17th when Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian officially visited Moscow at a ceremony in the Kremlin.
The agreement strengthens Iran and Russia as strategic partners, highlighting the commitment between the two countries to overcome external challenges through deeper collaboration.
During his recent visit to Moscow, the Iranian Foreign Minister sent a message to President Putin from Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution.
In an interview with RT, he emphasized the importance of the treaty, saying “Iran-Russia relations have not been so close or robust.”
“This agreement raises our bonds to a strategic level and sends a clear message to the world. Our partnerships are built in the long term, from short-term disruption to imperviousness,” declared the top diplomat.
The revitalization of the treaty now rests on Tehran’s approval.
Araguchi added that Iranian parliament is “expected to ratify the treaty in the coming days,” and is expected to be fully implemented within the next few weeks.
The 20-year agreement, renewable through mutual consent, is designed to institutionalize cooperation, which has already grown significantly in recent years.
Analysts view the deal as a strategic counterweight to Western pressure, and both countries call it a stabilizing force among global volatility.
The treaty expressly rejects “unilateral enforcement measures.” This nods to US-led sanctions targeting Iran and Russia.
As the agreement moves towards implementation, bilateral trade and joint infrastructure projects, including the international North-South Transport Corridor, are expected to accelerate.
The ratification of the treaty marks a critical moment in Iran-Russia relations and sets the stage for Eurasia’s reconciliated geopolitical landscape.
