In an interview with Al Jazeera, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani spoke about Qatar’s diplomatic approach in the region and concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. He warned that any escalation in relations with Iran would have implications for neighboring countries.
Al Thani said relations between Qatar and Hamas began 13 years ago at the request of the United States. Qatar has faced criticism for hosting the movement, but al-Thani stressed that the assistance provided was targeted at Gaza residents, not Hamas itself. Allegations that Qatar provides financial support to Hamas are unfounded, he added. Al Thani said Qatar’s engagement contributed to achieving a ceasefire and the release of prisoners of war, stressing that lasting peace in the region requires the cooperation of all parties.
Al-Thani stressed that Qatar consistently faces misinformation campaigns aimed at damaging its reputation, but remains committed to resolving disputes diplomatically. He added that Qatar supports the Palestinian people but does not provide financial aid to rebuild what other countries have destroyed. He stressed that Gaza’s residents do not want to leave their land and that violation of the agreement could lead to renewed conflict.
Regarding broader regional issues, al-Thani said attempts to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue diplomatically were insufficient. He warned that any conflict involving Iran would have serious consequences for neighboring countries.
He also expressed hope that U.S. efforts could help resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which he said was harmful to Europe.
