The Euro Med Human Rights Monitor called on the UN Security Council to take urgent and decisive steps to halt Israel’s invasion of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to force Israeli occupation forces to withdraw completely from the country’s south and to comply with international law.
In a statement issued Sunday, rights observers said that ongoing Israeli attacks on Syria constituted a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter, explaining that Israel is attempting to impose a new reality through its policy of forced illegal annexation, and sought to expand security and military influence in southern Syria in southern Syria.
He also explained that in December 2024, Israel had used the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad government to launch a massive military campaign aimed at destroying the basic capabilities of Syrian forces, protecting the regional national sovereignty and undermining its ability to rebuild the regional power balance.
Additionally, Tel Aviv unilaterally ended the 1974 unarmed agreement between the two countries, which paved the way for Israeli forces to occupy buffer zones along the border in a serious violation of international law.
“It also established nine military facilities in Mount Harmon and occupied Golan, enhancing almost daily invasions of Syrian villages and towns with governors of Sweida and Knetra,” the Rights Group said.
Euromed emphasized that the shameful failure of the international system to hold Israel accountable for genocide crimes in the Gaza Strip is a major factor in encouraging it to boldly and publicly expand violations of international law.
“This international failure allowed Israel to circumvent its moral or legal obligations entirely, allowing it to act as a legal entity, pushing it forward to its forced consequences without fear of consequences in its blatant challenges and deliberate attempts to break global legal systems,” he added.
Euromediter’s human rights monitor said high-ranking Israeli officials publicly acknowledge the occupation of Syrian regions, confirming their quest to impose new reality within Syrian territory through military force.
On February 23, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tel Aviv would not allow the presence of Syrian forces south of Damascus, emphasizing that southern Syria is increasing its presence in this region while “demilitarizing” it.
