Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Michael Waltz will be present along with Ukrainian President Voldy Zelensky.
The meeting marks the first involvement between American and Ukrainian envoys following a tense exchange in an oval office involving Zelensky, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance earlier this month. After that meeting, Zelensky reaffirmed his commitment to peace.
“No one wants peace more than Ukrainians,” he said in a statement. “My team and I are ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership and will have peace that continues.”
Related news showed Trump on Sunday that he was “just ready” to lift the freeze on intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
“You know, there will be a conference in Saudi Arabia, including Russia,” Trump told reporters. “It’s going to be Ukraine, we’ll see if we can achieve something in the way we want to achieve something. This week, not only Ukrainians but Russians, many people died. So everyone wants to do it.
The meeting comes after President Trump took the toughest stance towards Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Friday. He suggested that Russia could be subject to additional sanctions imposed by the US
“Currently, based on the fact that Russia is absolutely “pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield, I am strongly considering tariffs and tariffs on Russia until we reach a major bank sanctions, sanctions and tariffs on Russia and a final settlement agreement on peace,” Trump wrote on the true social media platform. “Go to Russia and Ukraine, go to the table now before it’s too late. Thank you!!!”
