The senior official travelled to Saudi Arabia on Monday, and the US State Department and the Kremlin confirmed. They will meet on Tuesday in Riyadh for a meeting aimed at laying the foundation for peace negotiations, both sides said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov to President Vladimir Putin were there for the trip, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The State Department said:
Peskov said the meeting “dedicated to the possibility of negotiations on a Ukrainian resolution and will be dedicated to organizing a meeting between the two presidents.”
It has been previously suggested that US President Donald Trump will meet with Putin in Saudi Arabia. Trump said over the weekend that such meetings could happen “quickly.”
