Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced at a press conference in Moscow that Russia remains firmly attached to finding a political and diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program.
According to TASS, in response to a question about the recent telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Russia and Iran, during which issues of Iran’s nuclear program and related consultations were discussed, a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Russian government remains committed to actively seeking a political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
He added that the Russian government has repeatedly warned of the risk of “military actions” that threaten stability and security in West Asia, and stressed that any military attack on nuclear facilities, especially those under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is “unacceptable.”
Zakharova also pointed out that the United States’ military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, which it claimed was an act of self-defense, not only put the international non-proliferation regime in serious jeopardy, but also undermined the principles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which Iran has always fully complied with and which the IAEA has confirmed.
He further stated that despite attempts by some foreign actors to cause chaos and trouble in Iranian society, the Iranian government still prefers the path of dialogue to war and believes that national interests can be secured based on equal dialogue and taking into account mutual concerns.
He stressed that restarting talks requires “significant guarantees” that Iran’s nuclear facilities will not be targeted again by missiles or air strikes.
Zahariwa also stressed that Western countries need to put aside the threat of sanctions and military threats and return to diplomacy with Iran.
