“We don’t recognize that snapbacks are in effect,” Vasily Nevenzia said at a press conference Wednesday that it marks the start of the UN Security Council presidency in October.
He also accused the West of initiating illegal snapback procedures, despite being a “sequential violator” of Security Council resolution 2231.
He added that the Western states are open to diplomacy, but by invigorating snapbacks, they “confiscated diplomatic solutions.”
“So, some people have had ‘snapbacks’, so we’ll leave behind two parallel reality. That wasn’t for us. It creates problems. How do you get out of it? Let’s take a look. ”
Nebenzia further noted that Moscow was not satisfied with the UN chief. The UN chief has rushed to implement a legally flawed resolution on Security Council sanctions on Iran that had been terminated under the previously abandoned US JCPOA.
On August 28, the UK, Germany and France (collectively known as E3) invoked the snapback mechanism. This is a 30-day process that will restore all anti-Iran sanctions.
Tehran rejected the move as a non-gimaticime, citing the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA in 2018 and the European trio’s decision to conform to illegal sanctions rather than fulfilling its JCPOA obligations.
The 11th hour effort by Russia and China aimed to give diplomacy more time to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue, which led to insufficient votes at the Security Council on September 26th.
Two days later, the US and Europeans argued that anti-Iranian UN resolutions and related sanctions had been reimposed, urging all UN member states to implement restrictive measures.
