“We will never forget this support (from North Korea in clearing landmines in the Kursk region),” he said at a press conference, according to TASS news agency. “This work continues, it is dangerous and difficult.”
“And in fact, our South Korean friends are helping us a lot and we are very grateful,” Peskov said in response to a question about the Kremlin’s assessment of the North Korean military’s support for demining the Kursk region.
Demining operations in the Kursk region, which was previously liberated from Ukrainian forces, continue. Along with Russian experts, North Korean combat engineers are taking part in the difficult mission of clearing the area of explosives.
A North Korean combat engineer unit was formed and deployed to the region on orders from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The decision was based on a bilateral agreement under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang in June 2024.
