TEHRAN – Russia on Thursday said the threat of a military strike against Iran was “unacceptable and illegal,” warning that attacks on the Islamic Republic could potentially devastating if nuclear installations were bombed, US News reported.
US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with bombings and secondary tariffs on Sunday if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with Washington on its nuclear program.
Asked about the Iranian nuclear program and the dangers of the current situation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow is committed to finding solutions to Iran’s nuclear program that respects Tehran’s right to peace nuclear energy.
“The use of military force by Iranian opponents in the context of a settlement is illegal and unacceptable,” the ministry’s spokesman Maria Zakharova told reporters.
“The external threats to bomb Iran’s nuclear infrastructure facilities will inevitably lead to an irreversible global catastrophe. These threats are simply unacceptable.”
Russia and Iran signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” in January, but there are no mutual defense clauses. Under the contract, if one party is attacked, the other party will not help the invader.
Russia is denounced the US threat, Foreign Minister Sergei Riabav told Life Magazine. Riabakov said the attack on Iran could spread wider open conflicts in the Middle East.
“This outcome can be devastating across the region, especially if there is a strike in nuclear infrastructure,” Lyabakh said.
