The Russian military says the country’s air defense has fired hundreds of drones in what appears to be Ukraine’s biggest cross-border attack since Russia launched a special military operation in 2022.
Russian media cited a statement from the Ministry of Defense on Tuesday that around 337 Ukrainian drones were defeated overnight in 10 regions, including Moscow and Belgorod, Briance and Boronezh, on the border with Ukraine.
Other regions listed were deeper within Russia, including Kalga, Lipitsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Olyll and Riazan.
Kursk and Moscow were major targets as more than 200 drones were fired into these areas. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin says more than 70 drones have fallen in the capital alone.
Moscow region governor Andrei Vorovyov reported one death and three injuries as a result of the attack. This damaged some residential apartments and caused many cars to be fired in car parks elsewhere.
Video of the building, published by Ria Novosti, shows the burnt location on the facade of a multi-storey residential building, with small pieces of lining peeling off.
The attack led authorities to restrict flight and train services in some areas.
Six airports, including Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Shermetievo and Zukovsky, located just outside Moscow and just outside the Yaroslav and Nizhny Novgorod regions, were closed amid safety concerns.
Trains passing through Domodovo Station in the Moscow region have also been temporarily suspended, local officials reported.
There were no immediate comments from Ukrainian officials about the attack that led to a delegation from Kiev meeting with American Saudi Arabia diplomats about ending the war with Russia.
