Russia’s permanent mission to the United Nations, in a memo to the UN, sparked a snapback mechanism by Germany, France and the UK, formally rejected it to revive UN sanctions on Iran and revive efforts that it called “non-giatite”, “invalid”, and “harmful.”
Iran has met all of its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). But the US and European countries not only failed to fulfill their commitments, but the most important of them was lifting sanctions. The US not only withdrew from the agreement in 2018, but also forced other countries to increase US sanctions on Iran.
The snapback mechanism built into UN resolution 2231 allows JCPOA participants to recover sanctions if Iran violates the transaction. Russia’s permanent mission to the United Nations claims in a memo to the Security Council that European powers denounced the stock for failing to follow the dispute resolution process and undermining the agreement after the US withdrawal in 2018.
