The UN Security Council failed to pass the resolution on Friday, which would have prevented the re-challenge of UN sanctions against Iran against its nuclear program before the deadline for the punitive “snapback” measures.
UN sanctions on Iran will be reestablished at the end of the month unless the nine-security board agrees to expand sanctions relief further. The Friday resolution, released by South Korea, received support from only four countries: China, Russia, Pakistan and Algeria.
Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly emphasized the illegality of European countries’ actions to restore sanctions against Iran within the framework of the UN Security Council. This was repeated on September 20th by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Russian side has repeatedly pointed out the provocative and illegal nature of the actions of European countries participating in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Action Plan) and the South Korean presidency of the UN Security Council,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
As the UNSC was convened for a meeting on Iran’s sanctions on Friday, Russia was supported by China, Algeria and Pakistan to defend the continued lifting of sanctions against Iran, and the West and the US tried to restore restrictions despite decisions on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
