Tehran – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to Tehran in the coming days for important consultations covering bilateral, regional and international concerns, according to a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry. It’s planned.
The discussion scheduled for Tuesday will focus on a wide range of topics and deepen the ongoing discussions between Russia and Iran on mutual benefits and the evolving geopolitical landscape.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Saturday that Lavrov’s visit was a continuing regular exchange between the two countries, and was in the ally despite facing heavy pressure from Western sanctions. He said there was. “The visit will take place within the framework of an ongoing dialogue between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation regarding bilateral relations and international development,” Bakaei said.
Lavrov is expected to meet with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials. Moscow’s Iranian ambassador, Kazem Jalali, confirmed his day’s visit and emphasized that the meeting will cover a wide range of issues relating to mutual interest and global challenges. These talks take place at a time of growing tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, with continued conflicts in Ukraine continuing to dominate international debate.
This visit comes when Lavrov attended a 3+3 cooperation-style meeting in October 2023 after his last trip to Iran. The rally, along with Russia, Turkey and Iran, includes three South Caucasian countries: Amenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, focusing on regional cooperation.
As strategic partners, Iran and Russia continue to strengthen their relationship across different sectors, especially in the face of Western sanctions, which have only strengthened their commitment to cooperation. In 2001, the two countries signed a long-term cooperation agreement known as the Basic Convention on Mutual Relations and the Principles of Cooperation.
In January 2024, Iran and Russia took another step towards deepening their alliance with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin described it as a new chapter in the evolving partnership between the two countries and welcomed the agreement as an important milestone in long-term cooperation.
The visit comes amid rising global tensions, particularly amid ongoing US-Russia negotiations over the war in Ukraine. Some analysts believe that Iran may also be included in the scope of these negotiations.
