TEHRAN – In a landmark decision on Friday, the UN Tourism Executive Council elected UAE’s Shaika Al Novais as its next secretary-general for its term of office from 2026 to 2029.
Al Nowais will become the first woman to lead an agency in her 50-year history, marking a key milestone for gender representation in global tourism governance.
In the polls held in Madrid, Al Noveis secured a decisive victory, winning 24 votes in the second round, well above the required minimum of 18. Her closest rival, Greece’s Harry Theoharis, won 11 votes. The election results await for formal approval by the UN General Assembly before Al Nowais officially takes office in January 2026.
Currently serving as corporate vice president at Rotana Hotels in Abu Dhabi, Alnais is recognized for her leadership in hospitality and tourism development. Following the vote, she outlined five-pillar strategies aimed at transforming the sector: responsible tourism, capacity building, technology for good, innovative financing and smart governance.
“As an Emirati woman, I am honored to make history,” said Al Noveis. “This is not only a personal achievement, but a commitment to advancing global tourism in ways that benefit our planet, empower our community and ensure inclusive growth.”
Her election comes when UN tourism faces considerable challenges, especially following the withdrawal of major countries such as the US, Canada and the UK. Al Nowais will be tasked with regaining trust, increasing transparency and piloting agents throughout the post-pandemic era of rapid change and innovation in the travel industry.
