Tehran – The adaptation of the play “The Strange Couple” by American playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon is set in Tehran’s Hamoon Theatre.
Hossein Kashfi ASL is the director of the play, translated by Shahram Zargar.
“The Odd Couple” is a classic play that premiered on Broadway in 1965. The success on stage has resulted in numerous adaptations over the years, including the highly popular 1968 film, several television series, and various spinoffs and derivative works.
The story centers around two discordant roommates. Its contrasting personality creates comedic tensions, highlighting themes of friendship, acceptance and quirks of human nature.
The original plot features Felix Unger, a neurotic and obsessively neat news writer (or television adaptation photographer), who is abandoned by his wife. With nowhere else to go, Felix moves in with his best friend, Oscar Madison, a laidback, loose sports writer. Despite Oscar’s carefree attitude, he is characterized by careless spending, gambling and messy apartments, but he enjoys a relaxed lifestyle.
Felix, on the other hand, is constantly tense, obsessively orderly, has little joy in life, and often points out the flaws and mistakes of others, including herself. His attempts at mild fixes often backfire, annoying his friends, and even causing the collapse of the weekly poker game. Oscar initially feels forced to ask Felix to leave after a brief living, but soon Felix’s presence has a positive effect on him, and their friendship endures despite their differences.
Neil Simon sold film and television rights to Paramount Pictures in 1967. The 1968 film adaptation starred Jack Lemon as Felix and Walter Matou as Oscar, with Massau changing his stage role. The film was a huge success, expanding its environment beyond just Oscar’s apartments, including various locations around New York City. Simon himself wrote the script and won an Academy Award nomination for his work, with director Gene Sachs bringing the story to life.
The popularity of the story spurred the 1970-1975 TV sitcoms on ABC. Simon initially approved the TV adaptation, but he later changed his opinion and even made a cameo appearance in the final season.
Most recently, from 2015 to 2017, CBS produced the “Strange Couple” sitcom, starring Oscar Perry as Oscar and Thomas Lennon as Felix.
“Strange Couples” remains an important part of American comedy history, adapting to the changing times, maintaining the core themes of humorous clashes of friendship, eccentricity and personality. Its various incarnations continue to entertain the audience, demonstrating the timeless charm of Neil Simon’s witty, insightful storytelling.
Neil Simon (1927-2018) was an American playwright and screenwriter. He wrote over 30 plays and received a combination nomination for Oscar and Tony than any other writer.
He was one of the most reliable hit makers in Broadway history and one of the world’s most performed playwrights. Although he is primarily a comic writer, some of his plays, particularly The Eugene Trilogy and The Sunshine Boys, reflect on the experiences of Jewish Americans in the 20th century.
