“The Stronger” is an 1889 Swedish play that consists of only one scene. The main characters are two women. Mrs. X is speaking and Teacher Y is silent. This is an example of a dramatic monologue.
It explores the power struggles evident in the human psyche and confronts audiences with timeless themes of betrayal, infidelity, and hierarchy at work within a patriarchal society.
The women on stage represent pieces of a character’s mind. Some parts are unable to act and are controlled by the “agent” of the persona, while others are capable of voice and autonomy in the face of the climactic conflict of the unstable relationship.
“The Stronger” has a dramatic intensity that few plays can have. Only one character speaks, but the souls of three are deftly laid bare.
August Strindberg (1849-1912) is one of Sweden’s leading playwrights. He was also a teacher, journalist, author of scientific and political papers, short story writer, poet, essayist, and painter.
Strindberg’s main strength as a playwright lies not so much in his dramatic technique as in his insight and exploration of the human mind. His main play is a very precise and narrow view of the female soul. Some of his own domestic struggles are expressed in the women’s studies of his plays. He really likes to show that one character is better than another.
Strindberg was a prolific writer who drew directly from his personal experiences, producing over 60 plays and over 30 works of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics during a career spanning four decades. I wrote
A bold experimenter and iconoclast, he experimented with a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and historical drama to anticipating the dramatic techniques of expressionism and surrealism. I explored.
From his early works, Strindberg developed innovative forms of dramatic action, language, and visual composition. He is considered the “father” of modern Swedish literature.
In addition to Stronger, Strindberg’s important one-act plays include The Outlaw, Countess Julie, The Creditor, Pariah, and In the Face of Death.
