Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, announced on Monday that the Sudanese military has decided to withdraw from El Fasher, citing systematic destruction and killings of civilians by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which had earlier declared full control of the North Darfur state capital.
In a televised address broadcast by the military via X, al-Burhan said the military and local security leadership in El Fasher had reached an agreement to leave the city to protect civilian lives.
“The military leadership of El Fasher, including the Security Committee, has decided that it is necessary to withdraw from the city of El Fasher following the systematic destruction and crimes against civilians,” Al Burhan said. “We are determined to rid the country of mercenaries and ensure retribution for all the martyrs and the people of the city.”
Al-Burhan added that the military remains capable of “turning the tide and achieving victory after victory” and asserted that the military is aligned with the will of the Sudanese people. “The crimes committed in El Fasher are a clear violation of Security Council resolutions and international norms, and are being watched by the whole world with impunity,” he said, condemning the international silence.
