The bombing of suicide cars led to a convoy of Ugandan peacekeeping forces from the African Union’s Support Port and the Somalia Stabilization Mission (Ousom) located near the towns of Savid and Anor in the Lower Shovel area.
Extremist group Al Shabaab has allegedly blamed the attack via an affiliated media outlet, claiming that 20 Ugandan soldiers have been killed and more than 43 were injured. The group also claimed that nine Somali soldiers were killed, eight wounded, and at least three armored vehicles were destroyed in the explosion.
According to media related to rebels, the bombing was caused by suicide bombings that drove vehicles loaded with explosives and targeted joint convoys.
This marks the second deadly bombing in recent weeks targeting Ugandan troops in the Sabid and Anole region, located southwest of the capital Mogadishu. Last month, bombing of similar suicide cars in the same area killed more than dozens of Ugandan troops and injured several others.
Ugandan military officials later confirmed the incident as the most deadly attack on Somali peacekeeping forces in the past two years.
