TEHRAN – Two explosions rocked Mashhad on Sunday evening, reviving air defense systems near 17 Shahrivar Street, causing a fire at Mashhad International Airport. Initial reports show that suicide drones were the cause of airport attacks, causing security concerns.
At about 18:30 local time, the air defense units responded to hostile activities near 17 Shahrivar Street in Mashhad, causing explosions and thick smoke throughout the region. Witnesses reported the activation of the air defense system after hearing the explosion loudly.
At the same time, Mashhad International Airport experienced a fire caused by the explosion. Sources say suicide drones were behind the attack on the airport, leading to a decommissioned aircraft fire at the end of the runway. Authorities have confirmed that the airport’s operating facilities and runways are not damaged, and full security remains.
Local officials have yet to disclose further details or possible casualties. Security forces continue to investigate the incident while maintaining high vigilance in the city.
Mashhad, the second largest city in Iran and a major religious and transport hub, rarely faces such security threats, making these events particularly surprising to residents and travelers. The situation remains fluid and updates are expected as investigations progress.
