When the incident happened more than an hour before kickoff, supporters gathered to greet the team bus outside the RCDE Stadium. The driver’s car was sandwiched between the two containers, and more damage occurred as several supporters were urged to throw things at the vehicle. In response, the driver accelerated and attacked about 20 fans.
Local police confirmed that the driver of the car was in custody and was subject to a Bressa Aliser test.
“Several people were injured outside the Espanyol stadium after being attacked by a car,” Mossos Doscadra, a local police officer in Barcelona, confirmed in a simple statement.
“The situation is under control and there is no risk to the people in the stadium already.
“The injured are responding to the necessary medical services and the driver of the vehicle is in custody.”
Of the 14 injured fans, four have been reported to be less severe, while others suffered minor injuries. The most serious reported injury was a broken leg.
The announcement at the stadium also confirmed the situation was under control, adding that none of the injuries were “serious.”
The game continued as planned, with Barcelona defeating Espanyol to win the first year Lariga title of manager Hansifrik, who will be in charge of the Catalan side.
