TEHRAN – Iran’s attorney general has called for legal action against direct U.S. responsibility for Israel’s June invasion of Iran, after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged involvement.
Gholamhossein Mosenyece said on Monday that President Trump’s comments had clear legal implications and needed to be investigated nationally and internationally.
Mohseni-Ejeh insisted that the president’s words amounted to a confession of criminal activity and called on prosecutors to take swift action. “The President of the United States once again unequivocally confesses to criminal acts against Iran and the Iranian people, stating that he was personally and directly involved in the 12-day war,” he said, adding that such a confession “has serious consequences in terms of legal and criminal rules and provisions of international law.” “The Attorney General and the Deputy Secretary of Justice for International Affairs should prepare arrangements to investigate this crime in both international and domestic courts,” he said, stressing that confessions are one of the strongest pieces of evidence.
The push for accountability comes after President Trump said on November 6 that Iran “bears great responsibility” for the attack. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has stepped up its calls for justice, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sending a formal letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council. In the communication, Aragushi said President Trump’s confession “proves Washington’s direct role in the crime of aggression” and denounced the attack as a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and the basic rules of international law.
Iranian officials listed war crimes committed by the United States and Israel and said the attacks targeted a wide range of civilians and infrastructure. They noted that the attackers killed dozens of civilians, including women and children, scientists, academics, journalists, and prisoners. They deliberately attacked hospitals, state broadcasting centers, prisons, and peaceful nuclear facilities. Araghchi insisted that the Iranian government “will use all legal means to bring those responsible for the invasion to justice and seek compensation for the damages suffered,” and called on the United Nations to take steps to hold the United States and Israel accountable.
