While a ceasefire is held in Gaza after the 15-month conflict between Israel and Gaza was abolished and more than 45,000 Palestinians died, Israel cleared tens of thousands of people from camps in the West Bank in recent weeks, sparking fears about the possibility of future appendixes.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz ordered the troops to prepare for a “long-term stay” saying the camps were cleared for “next year,” and said residents would not be allowed to return home.
“Following this invitation from the UNGA (UN General Assembly), I confirm that a meeting of high contractual parties to the Geneva Convention will be held in Geneva on March 7,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nicholas Bidau said in an email in response to questions from Reuters.
The Fourth Geneva Convention is part of a series of international treaties agreed in 1949 after World War II, and defines the protection of humanitarianism for civilians living in armed conflicts or occupied areas.
The UN General Assembly asked Switzerland to hold a meeting last September when the Gaza War was still raging. The Swiss Foreign Ministry said similar meetings were held in 1999, 2001 and 2014.
